Founding, performing members of the Nordic Council

  • Merri Heikkilä

At the age of 8 Merri had a chance to try some circus at his local youth circus and was immediately intrigued. A few years after rolling in to Sorin Sirkus he decided to specialize in juggling and has since been trying to find new ways to manipulate objects.
In 2013 he decided to pursue a professional career and was admitted to the circus department of Codarts University in Rotterdam, Netherlands, from where he graduated in June 2017. Since then Merri has been working on different shows and solo projects around Europe.
By combining movement and acrobatics with juggling, Merri seeks to create performances that offer an unique experience for the audience.
Aside from working with the Nordic Council, from 2015 Merri has been working as a part of the circus collective Sirkum Polaris as one of it’s founding members. Their first show “Kulovalkea”, which is produced in collaboration with company Nuua, had its pre-premiere in 2021.

  • Bjarni Árnason

Juggler, diablo lover and great believer in human happiness are words that can be used to describe the essence of Bjarni Árnason. Born and raised in Reykjavik. He got first time in touch with the circus in the Parliament Square in Reykjavik one summer and that moment got him to join the Icelandic circus scene by performing and then later teaching to youth circus.
In 2013, he packed his bags and fulfilled his dream to study the circus arts at the prestigious Rotterdam based university, Codarts. There he found how wide the circus arts world is and the wonders of contemporary circus. From graduating he has been working and creating shows with Sirkus Íslands, Hringleikur and as one of the original members the Nordic Council.
With his out loud character, Bjarni brings a subtle spectacular, sincere stage presence and eccentric humour to the stage. From the main stage in the National theatre in Iceland to a outside show for a school in Mardin, Turkey. He gives a contrast to the shows he is in by eccentric attitude and mild humour.

  • Jakob Jacobsson

Originally from Sweden, Jakob discovered contemporary circus in Paris, started his training in the UK, and subsequently moved to the Netherlands to study circus at Codarts Rotterdam.
Gathering perspectives from all these places while simultaneously adding his background in visual arts to his aerial rope practice has led to his own subtle style.
Utilising as few added elements as possible, his style is notably minimalist and sparse. Bringing a visual clarity to the stage, he focuses on the inherent language in circus as a craft. By using the negative space on stage, as well as pauses and silence, he draws attention to the smallest details of his performance and allows his audience to become aware of not just the ‘what’ but also the ‘how’ of the performance.

When not performing with the Nordic Council he plays with Revue Regret in their show Dear Doubts.
